Explain what is hidden

What could explain what we see?

Air, light, static electricity and magnetism can have visible effects. Each explanation has its own evidence and limits.

Separate what eyes can see from what a diagram helps explain.

  1. Gina the yellow giraffe and her much smaller brown owl friend Ollie investigate a clear plastic cup, a white paper towel and a small clear tub of water on a lavender picnic mat. Nothing has been dunked yet.

    Stop 1 · Discovery 11

    Can paper stay dry underwater?

Use evidence for hidden air · Ages 4–7 with a grown-up

Recall this cup when talking about another place air takes up space.

  2. Gina the yellow giraffe and her small owl friend Ollie look at a straight blue pencil beside an empty clear cup on a lavender floor mat. The title asks whether the pencil bent, inviting an experiment before showing its result.

    Stop 2 · Discovery 8

    Did the pencil bend?

    Check an appearance · Ages 4–7 with a grown-up

Ask how checking an object another way helped you understand its appearance.

    Read & try together
  3. Gina the yellow giraffe and her small owl friend Ollie study a coral plastic comb, a folded wool cloth and small pieces of tissue paper on a low wooden board in their meadow. The paper is still resting on the board.

    Stop 3 · Discovery 14

    Can a comb lift paper?

Compare before and after rubbing · Ages 5–7 with a grown-up

Compare this pull with the magnet story without calling them the same force.

    Read & try together
  4. Gina and Ollie study two shiny trays on their sea-green picnic mat. A large red U-shaped teaching magnet lies separately in front. A MAGNET label names it before either tray is tested.

    Stop 4 · Discovery 20

    Does shiny mean magnetic?

    Test a material claim · Ages 5–7 with a grown-up

Ask whether both shiny trays had to behave the same, and what the test showed.

For a family or a class.

Choose one discovery per session and read its adult setup first. Gather only that session’s materials. Keep earlier records available for comparison.

Children can link an observation to an idea without treating all invisible effects as the same force.

Choose one story per session. The print cards include an index; each story’s full activity guide is available from its page or the print center.
