Lead an investigation

How could we find out together?

Choose a measuring unit, compare a bridge design, then follow a living bean over days. Let the child help make a fair plan.

Choose a question, plan what to keep fixed, record what actually happens and revisit.

  1. In an autumn-tinted clearing, Gina and Ollie study a long golden leaf on a violet picnic cloth. The leaf is the focus of a length question; there are no measurement results on the cover.

    Stop 1 · Discovery 19

    Same leaf. Different numbers?

Measure with equal units · Ages 5–7 with a grown-up

Ask for both a number and its unit when describing an informal measurement.

    Read & try together
  2. Gina the yellow giraffe and small brown owl Ollie investigate two closed books and a sheet of paper. A chunky coral toy block waits beside the books. The title asks, Can paper be a bridge?

    Stop 2 · Discovery 4

    Can paper be a bridge?

    Test a design · Ages 4–7 with a grown-up

Ask why the upright sides mattered when looking at a folded cardboard package.

    Read & try together
  3. Gina the yellow giraffe and smaller brown owl Ollie inspect one unsprouted bean held against damp paper inside a clear open cup. The warm indoor window-garden scene invites the question of what will emerge first.

    Stop 3 · Discovery 17

    What grows first?

    Observe over days · Ages 5–7 with a grown-up

Look back at the drawings and ask which part came first in your bean.

For a family or a class.

Choose one discovery per session and read its adult setup first. Gather only that session’s materials. Keep earlier records available for comparison.

Children can suggest a next observation or change, with adult support and no required writing.

Choose one story per session. The print cards include an index; each story’s full activity guide is available from its page or the print center.
